9/11/2001...A date very few of us could ever forget. Who doesn't remember where they were and what they were doing when they heard...
I was working for US Airways Express in Roanoke, VA. 9/11 was the beginning of the end of that individual express airline (it had just started). A year later I "accidentally" got a job in radio! But back to 9/11....A sister of one of our Flight Attendants called wanting me to find her sister. I was confused.
"I need you to tell me exactly where my sister is"
"I'm sorry...I wouldn't have any access to the crews' schedules".
"Well an airplane just crashed into the World Trade Center and I want to know it isn't the one she is on!"
Still so hard to believe. :(
There's another part of 9/11 I'd like to share with you. This one has to do with - you guessed it, Rick Springfield. I know when I talk about my favorite rock star most of you guys think "here she goes again, school-girl crush..." But one of my favorite things about being a Rick Springfield fan is the other fans!
I have met some of the nicest, funniest, most kind people thanks to Mr. Springfield, including my own bff. There was one however, that I never got to know but many of the other fans did.
Before there was facebook, there was yahoo message board and many of the Rick fans communicated there through email. Marni Pont O'Doherty was posting in that way just minutes before the airplane hit the building she was working in. Every year on 9/11 I see many posts about this woman Marni whom I had never met or chatted with. Even Rick has talked about this. What a nice way to be remembered -- by your favorite rock star himself!
If you ever doubt my motto "It's all about the connection", check out this lovely blog from author Michele Mathews regarding Marni Pont O'Doherty and how this connection changed her life.
R.I.P. Marni. I wish I had been blessed to know you. I'm glad the fans and Rick did :)
